Fact: There are five different areas of Identity Theft

Credit identity

Fact: When your identity is stolen you will have to deal with:

Credit card companies
Financial institutions
Credit repositories

- Department of Motor Vehicles
- Social Insurance/Social Security Dept.

Law Enforcement Personnel
Any other organizations that may maintain information about you

Fiction: I am very careful with my information, so I am not at risk.

Fact:

No matter how careful you are with your information, you are at risk! Your information is stored in so many databases that you can not completely protect yourself. Current law states that individuals be notified if their personal information is compromised. However, by the time you get that letter in the mail it may be too late. Following are some real life instances.

Risking 1.2 Million people: Federal employees, including some U.S. Senators, felt the fear of exposure when Bank of America corporation lost tapes containing personal information including Social Security numbers and account information.

Risking 600,000 people: Personal data on employees of media giant TimeWarner was lost in transit by its storage company, The lost files contained data on current and former employees going back to 1986, as well as some of their dependents and beneficiaries.

Risking 3.9 Million people: CitiFinancial lost a box of computer tapes with private account information, including Social Security numbers and financial records when transporting the data from new Jersey to Texas via UPS.
